Thai domestic white sugar sales accounting for marketing year 2018 totaled 2.51 Mt: down 3.5% from a year ago.
Despite a rise in direct consumption sales (+ 5.7% y-o-y), volumes delivered to industrial users significantly dropped (-13%) : a number of them - most notably from the F&B segment - having already lowered their products' sugar content, in anticipation of the new excise tax which should be enforced by the beginning of Q4 2019, following a 2-year grace period.
However, with the reallocation of 500,000 t of raw sugar for domestic ethanol purposes, 2017/18 domestic sugar sales eventually rose when compared to the previous campaign.
