After reaching 2.36 Mt in 2018-19 [Oct-Sep basis], EU sugar imports totaled 500 kt by the end of Nov 19 : up 36% from the same period a year ago.
This substantial increase results from increased shipments of "raws for refining" originating from Ngwane (+28 kt), Cuba (+22 kt), Cambodia (22kt) and Fidji (+20 kt). Interestingly, Brazilian shipments are down 19 kt from the same period a year ago.
A detailed look at import destinations also reveals :
- a very significant increase in "raws for refining" shipments to Spain (+104 kt),
- that Spain and UK account for 49% of EU sugar imports (all types) this season.
Meanwhile, the proportion of "raws for refining" is slightly up accounting for 51% of the total volume imported (against 48% a year ago) and imports under the IPR regime are almost on par with last year totaling 92 kt.
