EU sugar imports totaled 646 kt by the end of Dec 19: up 32% from the same period a year ago.
This substantial increase results from increased shipments originating from Cuba (+54 kt), Fiji (+36 kt), Brazil (+32kt), Mozambique (+29 kt), Ngwane (+29 kt).
A detailed look at import destinations also reveals :
- a very significant increase of Spanish imports (+122 kt) followed by Bulgaria (+21 kt) and Italy (+17 kt) ;
- that Spain and UK account for 45% of EU sugar imports (all types) so far this season.
Meanwhile, the proportion of "raws for refining" accounts for 44% of the total volume imported this year (against 48% a year ago) while imports under the IPR regime are up 22% from a year ago totaling 140 kt by the end of Dec 19.
