For the second successive year in a row, Thai domestic white sugar sales went down totaling 2.48 Mt in 2019.
This situation largely resulted from a significant decline in domestic white sugar sales during Q4 2019 which only accounted for 530 kt against an average 640 kt over the same period during the previous 3 years.
Overall, the drop in domestic white sugar sales this year resulted from a decline in volumes sold to industrial users (especially the food and dairy sectors) which was also characterized by an increase of sales to the pharmaceutical industry.
Taking into account domestic sugar sales of raws destined to the MSG, Lysine, Bioplastics and biochemicals industries as well as the sugar-equivalent amount of EtOH produced using sugarcane juice, we estimate that the 2019 Thai sugar consumption totaled 3.29 Mt
