The Australian cane harvest and crush has ended after a 31-week campaign with the final tally reaching 30.1 mln tonnes crushed. Unseasonal rain together with operational challenges at some mills proved disruptive to the harvest and crush with the season prolonged by an additional 3 weeks compared to last year.

Wet weather is frustrating the final days of the Australian crush. The weekly crush tonnage has dropped sharply due to wet weather and as more mills reach crush-out. Tully mill finished their crush on 4 December, and Plane Creek on 12 December. Of Australia’s 21 mills, only 5 are still active compared to 10 at the end of November.

The Australian crush tonnage is dropping sharply as more mills crush-out. A tally of 788,000 tonnes in week 25 was followed by 520,000 tonnes in week 26 (week ending 28 November), albeit that figure was further reduced by wet weather. The cane crush is now almost complete with only 4 % of the crop remaining in the field.

The Australian industry achieved a crush tally of 1.38 mln tonnes in week 23, but this slumped to only 1.04 mln tonnes in week 24 (week ending 14 November), with some rain interruptions and several mills already achieving crush-out. The cane crush is now more than 90% complete.

The Australian industry achieved a crush tally of 1.34 mln tonnes in week 21 and 1.40 mln tonnes in week 22 (week ending 31 October). The cane crush is now more than 80% complete. Some regions are more advanced. The Burdekin mills for instance now have crush-out firmly in their sights: 3 mills by 10th November and the fourth by 21st November with more than 90% of the cane crop harvested and crushed.

The Australian industry achieved a crush tally of 1.36 mln tonnes in both week 19 and week 20 (week ending 17 October). Rainfall disrupted harvesting in the Southern Queensland region and in the New South Wales industry. Even so, despite the rain disruptions to the harvest over past weeks, the cane crush is now three-quarters done (much the same as for last season at this time). Some regions are more advanced. The Burdekin mills for instance have now processed more than 80% of their total estimated crop.

The impacts of the significant wet weather event that interrupted the cane harvest- seeing fields too wet to harvest and many mills idled during the fortnight ending 6 September – have thankfully dissipated.
The weekly crush tally for the Australian industry’s 22 mills recovered to over 1.4 mln tonnes in week 16 (fortnight ending 19 September), up from 1.0 mln the previous week and double the disastrous level of only 0.7 mln tonnes seen when the rain event hit in week 14.

A significant wet weather event has interrupted the cane harvest, seeing fields too wet to harvest and many mills idled during the fortnight ending 6 September (Week 14). Widespread overnight rain August 31 brought harvesting to a standstill at Wilmar’s mills in the Burdekin, Proserpine and Plane Creek regions, whilst only limited harvesting was taking place in the Herbert.
