Domestic production output has been revised down although we believe that there still exists some further downward potential. As for imports, our calculations suggest that the arbitrage window is closed. Imports should therefore be limited in coming weeks.

China sugar update [Oct 2021]

The 2021/22 sugarbeet processing season is now effective in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang while the first cane processing mill located in Yunnan is reported to have started the season.
Despite significant stocks being carried forward on 2021/22, prices remained quite stable over the past months.
As for imports, calculations performed do not reveal any economic incentive for domestic refiners to ship raws for refining at destination.

The 2021/22 season started in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang were a total of 13 beet processing facilities were operating by October 9th. Meanwhile, imports in [Sep 21] – although no official statistics is available are expected to total 600 kt.

The last cane sugar mill stopped operations on July 2nd, putting an official end to the 2020/21 crushing season which resulted in a domestic Chinese production of 10.67 Mt.
