Indian sugar update report [Q4 2021]

The 2021/22 season (Oct-Sep basis) is now in full flow with 11.5 Mt of sugar produced nationwide by the end of [Dec 21]. Meanwhile, exports – which boomed early this season – have been drawn to a halt in a number of States as domestic prices can yield better returns than exports.

Production is up 11% and totaled 4.77 Mt on November 30th. Although production in Uttar Pradesh trails behind last year due to a late start of the crush this season, output in Maharashtra is up 29% at 2.03 Mt.
Meanwhile and despite a significant slowdown in recent weeks, contracted volumes of Indian sugar exports have reached 3.5 Mt with an estimated 0.9 Mt of sugar being physically shipped.

With about 300 sugar mills operating nationwide by 17th November, India is now well into the 2021/22 crushing season. If production figures are ahead of last year, Uttar Pradesh is slightly behind schedule due to unusual rainfalls in October that slowed down field operations and could affect cane sugar content.
As for exports, Indian sugar mills have already signed contracts for an estimated 2.5 Mt so far this season.

After a 2020/21 season [Oct/Sep basis] which concluded with a total sugar output of 31.1 million tonnes (Mt), we have now entered the 2021/22 season for which we expect sugar production to total 31.5 Mt as ample water availability (88% of the reservoirs are full) should improve cane productivity.
